Day of Vodoun

Also know as Fête du Vodoun (literally Vodoun Festival) is a public holiday in Benin that celebrates the nation's history surrounding the West African religion of Vodoun. The celebration is held annually on January 10 throughout the country but most notably in the city of Ouidah. PROMETRA has co sponsors this event and was one of the primary organizations responsible for Vodou to be officially declared  a religion in Benin in 1996. The festival is filled with singing, dancing and direct spiritual communion. The festival has attracted thousands of devotees and tourists to Ouidah to participate in the festivities ever since its inception. This bold action is the first to break away from the colonial history of demonization and criminalization of African traditional practices, beliefs, spiritual and healing systems.
